Step 1: To start, the ankle should be placed at 90 degrees. Apply the heel and lace pads and

then apply Pre-Wrap to the entire ankle.

Step 2: Using the Clock Method:

  • Apply three top anchor strips, overlapping each one: (½ inch starting from the end or insertion of the gastroc or calf muscle pulling the tape from medial (inside) to the lateral (outside) side of the ankle.)

  • From 11: 00 to 11:00;

  • 10:00 to 10:00; and

  • 9:00 to 9:00.

Step 3: Apply an anchor strip at the mid-foot.

Step 4: Using the Clock Method, apply all vertical stir-ups and horizontal strips by

overlapping them ½ of an inch.

  • Apply one vertical stir-up pulling the tape medial to lateral from 12:00 to 12:00.

  • Apply one horizontal strip pulling the tape medial to lateral from 6:00 to 6:00.

  • Apply one vertical stir-up pulling the tape medial to lateral from 11:00 to 11:00.

  • Apply one horizontal strip pulling the tape medial to lateral 7:00 to 7:00.

Step 5: Apply one ankle lock.

  • Start by stretching the tape along the medial border of the medial malleous, and then begin to pull the tape towards the heel at a 45 degree angle.

  • Next, pull the tape upward at a 45 degree angle toward and around the front of the ankle.

  • Pull the tape around and above the medial and lateral malleous, then along the Achilles tendon.

  • Finally, pull the tape to the front of the ankle and tear to complete the ankle lock.

Step 6: Still using the Clock Method, apply one vertical stir-up pulling the tape medial to

lateral from 1:00 to 1:00. Next, apply one horizontal strip pulling the tape medial

to lateral from 8:00 to 8:00.

Step 7: Apply one Ankle Lock and Heel Lock:

  • Start by placing the tape along the medial border of the medial malleolus at a 45 degree angle.

  • Begin to pull the tape downwards towards the heel.

  • Next, pull the tape up toward and around the front of the ankle.

  • Pull the tape around and above the medial and lateral malleolus, then along the Achilles tendon.

  • Bring the tape forward to the front of the ankle, and then pull the tape back down towards the heel at a 45 degree angle.

  • Pull the tape up behind the lateral malleolus at a 45 degree angle.

  • Next, pull the tape up and around the back of the Achilles tendon, and then up towards the front of the ankle above the medial malleolus.

  • Bring the tape from the front of the ankle down towards the heel at a 45 degree angle.

  • Pull the tape upwards at a 45 degree angle behind the medial malleolus.

  • Pull the tape along and around the Achilles tendon, over and above the lateral malleolus, and then pull the tape to the front of the ankle.

  • Tear the tape, completing the ankle lock.

(Figure 8 and Reverse Figure 8.)

Step 8: Still using the Clock Method, close and cover up the open areas by

applying horizontal strips of tape from:

  • 9:00 to 9:00;

  • 10:00 to 10:00;

  • 11:00 to 11:00; and

  • 12:00 to 12:00

Step 9: Next, cover up all the open areas along the mid-foot region to the ankle.

Step 10: To end the lateral ankle tape job, close with an ankle lock. (Figure

8 and reverse figure 8.)
